What to bring for your license, permit or ID
Are you a new Arizona resident? If you have just moved to our beautiful state, you may be wondering how to transfer your driver’s license or ID card to Arizona. You can count on us to make it as easy as possible to apply for your driver’s license road test, ID card or instruction permit.
Standard driver’s license, learner’s permit or ID card
All documents must be originals or certified copies, in English, certified by the issuing agency. No photocopies.
- Licenses only: your current out-of-state license, or an official Motor Vehicle Record from your previous state, expired less than one year
- Proof of citizenship: original birth certificate or passport (may be expired)
- Your Social Security number, provided on the application and verified electronically with the Social Security Administration
- If the name on your proof of citizenship is different from your current name, legal proof of the name change: a marriage license or certificate (last name), a divorce decree (restored last name) or a court-ordered name change document. Change your name with the Social Security Administration first, and allow two business days before you come in.
- Or two forms of permissible name usage (cannot be used to change a first name): a driver license, ID or instruction permit issued by any state or US territory; a Social Security card; a US Military active duty or dependent ID card; a US Armed Forces driver license; a US Department of Veterans Affairs card; or a medical insurance ID card, including AHCCCS.
Federal Travel driver’s license or ID card
Learner’s permits do not qualify. In addition to the documents above, you will need proof of citizenship with an original birth certificate or a valid passport (cannot be expired), and two proofs of residency: any two pieces of mail or documents with your name and residential address (not a P.O. Box) issued from a business, organization or government agency. The full checklist is on our Arizona Travel ID page.
Learner’s permit testing and driver’s license exams
- We offer the Arizona Rules of the Road written test, as well as road skills testing.
- Teens who are at least 15 years and 6 months old and under 18 can apply for a graduated learner’s permit or motorcycle permit. To be issued the permit, you must pass both the written and vision tests. A parent or legal guardian approves the application by signing it in the office; if they cannot come in, a signed, notarized application is required.
- Permit drivers must have a licensed driver 21 years or older in the seat beside them. A permit for a vehicle is valid for 12 months.
- Road testing at our location is done by appointment only. Schedule a road test here.
- Testing manuals: Arizona Driver License Manual and the Motorcycle Operator Manual.
